What to Expect During Pregnancy
About Pregnancy
To become pregnant, a female egg must be fertilized by a male sperm. The fertilized egg then implants in your uterus and is then called an embryo. The embryo grows and develops in the uterus for the rest of your pregnancy. During pregnancy, there are many physical and emotional changes that you may experience.
Physical Changes
Throughout your pregnancy, many physical changes will occur. These changes are due to hormone changes, a growing baby, and preparation for delivery and breastfeeding. It is common for women to experience many of the following changes:
- acne and other skin problems
- backache
- constipation
- fatigue
- frequent urination
- headache
- heartburn and indigestion
- hemorrhoids
- leg and stomach cramps
- Nasal and sinus congestion
- nausea and vomiting
- sensitivity to smells
- sleep problems
- stretch marks
- varicose veins
- weight gain
Emotional Changes
Many women have emotional ups and downs during this time mainly due to increased hormones. Other factors such as career, health, housing situation, relationship with the father and other children can also affect a woman’s emotions.
Many women love being pregnant and enjoy their experience. Others find the experience miserable. You may have questions and fears about pregnancy, being a new mother, and taking care of your newborn. Talking with other mothers about their experiences can help you through this time. Your WIC dietitian can answer questions about nutrition during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and feeding a newborn. Talk with your doctors about pregnancy and health questions you may have.
