GENERAL

I've lost my dog, what should I do?

The first thing you should do is check your neighborhood to see if the neighbors have seen the pet or if the animal is still running.

If the animal has not been seen then inform your local animal control officer and local shelter. We also strongly recommend coming into the shelter to physically look for your pet as we only hold stray animals for 3 working days.

I've found a dog, what should I do?

The animal should be turned over to the proper authorities immediately. Either to an animal control officer or take the animal to a shelter.

Animals found in Orem, Lindon, Pleasant Grove, American Fork, Cedar Fort,Highland, Alpine, Vineyard, and Lehi City should go to the Orem animal shelter located at 950 W. 950 N. Orem, Utah 84057 Phone: 801-229-7575.  Orem Animal Shelter

What do I do about my neighbor's barking dog?

Contact your local city's Animal Control officer.

Where can I go to get a discounted spay/neuter for my pet?

No More Homeless Pets has a mobile spay/neuter van that sometimes visits locally. You can check their schedule at UtahPets.Org

I think my neighbor is being cruel to his animals, what should I do?

Contact and report the incident to your local animal control officer immediately. Don't take matters into your own hands.

My dog has just bitten the mailman, what should I do?

You need to contact the animal control officer for your city or call your non-emergency police number.

If your dog broke the skin then your dog will need to be held for a quarantine period of 10 days. It is up to the animal control officer whether your dog can stay at home quarantined or if it will have to be impounded at the shelter.

What dog is good with kids?

Golden Retrievers are the best kid dog. Most people want a smaller dog, but unfortunately most small dogs can be nippy with childen. If you are absolutely set on getting a small dog for your kids then we recommend starting with a puppy.

Also most dogs do better if they are trained with the children. Check with a reputable dog trainer, they may offer training classes for dogs that kids can attend and help train the family pet.

Do the leash laws apply to cats?

Yes they do.

Just like dogs, cats need to be confined to your property. Any cat caught roaming may be impounded and brought to the shelter.

I want to chain up my dog. Is this OK?

No it isn't. Dogs are pack animals and consider you their pack. Chaining a dog up to one small area day after day makes the dog think it's being punished by being seperated from the pack. A lot of the problem dogs we see are animals that have been chained up.

If you make an animal a part of the family by regular walks and training, you are less likely to see problems with the dog, and we are less likely to see your dog in the shelter.

What is a good dog/cat food?

The same thing applies to pet food that applies to everything else-"you get what you pay for". The cost of a pet food usually rules the quality of the ingredients in the pet food. Stay with a reputable brand that has been around for a while, such as Iams and Science Diet, and stay away from lamb and rice type foods and the no-name brands unless told to by your Veterinarian.
