Current Trends in Substance Abuse
Substance Abuse

Utah County has some of the lowest rates of substance abuse in the state of Utah and nationally; however, we still have a significant problem. Rates of abuse for some substances have risen rapidly over the past several years. Methamphetamine continues to be the most frequently reported primary drug of abuse at admission, and the majority of methamphetamine treatment admissions are for women. Within the past five years, we have seen heroin admission rates more than double. Marijuana use is still the single largest reason for treatment admissions for Utah County youth.

Treatment Admissions by Primary Drug of Choice

* Methamphetamine was the most frequently reported illicit drug at admission during the years from 2000 -2005. Since then, prescription and illicit opiates (heroin) combined are the most frequent reason for admission to treatment.
