The Utah County Sheriff's Office Horse Posse is a valuable asset to the citizens and visitors of Utah County. The team is currently comprised of 32 members, a long with their horses of course! They are often seen during annual parades throughout the valley and state, but they are also extremely valuable to the Search and Rescue (SAR) team as well when we are conducting a mountain search for a lost or injured hiker.

The Horse Posse members often carry medical equipment, such as a rescue litter or cumbersome oxygen bottles, up the mountain trails to lighten the load for SAR volunteers carrying their heavy packs. Also, in many occasions, the lost hiker gets a free horse ride back down the mountain to awaiting family members. A few members of the Search and Rescue team themselves have been lucky recipient of a nice horseback ride back down to the command post.

The Horse Posse members also participate in various training opportunities in an effort to enhance their skills and abilities. They save us an enormous amount of time in the rescues they participate in. The Horse Posse has been requested by a number of other counties throughout the state to assist in searches. They respond willingly and do an excellent job.

The Utah County Sheriff's Office is indeed grateful for each and every member of the Sheriff's Horse Posse. They certainly make our lives easier and we are indebted to them for their service and dedication. The next time you see a proud member of the Sheriff's Horse Posse, please take a moment to thank them for all that they do to serve their fellow man.
