FAMILY PLANNING

Pregnancy takes a lot out of a woman's body. It takes one year for her to build her calcium stores back up to what they were pre-pregnancy. Other vitamins and minerals that need to be replaced are iron and folate. This cannot be done overnight or even in a few months.

A woman's body needs time to return to pre-pregnancy weight. The healthiest way to accomplish this is through healthy food choices and daily activity to lose one to two pounds a week. Naturally, this takes time and that's the point. Slow, steady weight loss is the best for your body. Women who are underweight need time to gain the weight their body needs to support a healthy pregnancy.

Women who have babies too close together put their baby at risk for premature birth, low birth weight, and other complications. Babies born prematurely can have developmental delays that affect them for the rest of their lives.

What can you do to avoid these complications? Give your body time to heal and recover from the last pregnancy - wait to get pregnant again. Talk to your doctor or midwife about birth control. See a family planning specialist. Contact the health department for information on family planning.
