Surveillance Public health surveillance is how a health department takes the pulse of its community.  It is epidemiology’s effort to identify when disease comes into an area.  By knowing normal patterns of disease and disease potential, a health department can effectively investigate, prevent, and control disease in the community.  When identified early, safety measures can be implemented to help stop or at least limit the spread of contagious disease.  Utah County Health Department’s (UCHD) most common source of surveillance data is reports of disease cases received from health-care providers who are required to report certain diseases. In addition, surveillance data may come from laboratory reports, surveys, disease registries, death certificates, or immunization coverage. A simple surveillance system monitors reports, investigates reportable diseases, looks for patterns by time, place and person. Reports from this system help guide public health action. UCHD's human surveillance system for pandemic influenza will include disease reports from health-care providers, reports of number of cases from sentinel provider sites, school absenteeism records etc. Other surveillance systems coordinate with human surveillance systems.  They are veterinarian surveillance and wild bird surveillance.  UCHD is participates with state surveillance that will communicate with other health departments and participants from animal surveillance.
