Mosquito Facts
Most mosquitoes fly less than a mile from their breeding sites in their lifetime. There are some, however, that can travel 50 miles.
Only female mosquitoes feed on humans and animals - males feed on nectar. The blood obtained from a human or animal provides the protein necessary for a female mosquito to produce eggs.
A female mosquito will continue to 'bite' until it has collected enough protein.
Mosquitoes spread diseases by feeding on an infected host and then biting a human.
Mosquitoes breed in standing water and can lay 100 - 300 eggs at a time.
Mosquitoes develop from egg to adult in 4-7 days with warm temperatures speeding up the cycle.
In general, mosquitoes are most active at daybreak and dusk.
