How Independent Study Works
- Pick out the course you want to take.
- Send in the Application for Enrollment.
You do not need to be enrolled at USU to take an Independent Study course.
The enrollment fee is $55 per credit, plus any other fees described
under individual courses. The entire fee must accompany the Application
for Registration. The cost of the textbook is not included in this fee.
- You have one year to complete the course.
Beginning in the Fall of 1998, USU will switch to semesters. From September
1, 1997 until September 1, 1998, no extensions or reinstatements will
be allowed. After September 1, 1998, two extensions of three months
each may be obtained.
- Credit by Quarter Hours:
There are four quarters in an academic year.
3 quarter hours = 2 semester hours
4 quarter hours = 2 2/3 semester hours
5 quarter hours = 3 1/3 semester hours
- A total of 45 Independent Study credits may be used toward fulfilling
the requirements for a bachelor's degree. This is approximately one-fourth
of the 186 credits needed for graduation from USU.
- You will receive confirmation of your enrollment and a list of books/materials
needed.
PLEASE NOTE: DO NOT ORDER BOOKS UNTIL YOU RECEIVE CONFIRMATION OF ENROLLMENT
IN CASE THE TEXTBOOK NEEDED HAS BEEN CHANGED.
- Books can be ordered from the USU Bookstore.
Call Express-A-Book at 1-800-662-3950 for price quotes and to order
textbooks. Students should purchase books from the Independent Study
Section of the USU Bookstore. The bookstore will buy back your Independent
Study textbooks at 50% of the current price, as long as the book is
being used and is needed.
- Additional supplies may also be purchased directly from:

- Assignments will be sent to the instructor via mail.
No more than five assignments should be submitted during one week without
special permission from the instructor. Assignments may be faxed if
they are typed or handwritten in black ink, each page is labeled with
the student's name, social security number, class, assignment number,
and page number. The fax number is 435-797-0861. Graded assignments
will not be faxed back to the student.
- Exams can be taken at the USU Extension Office in Provo.
No final exam may be scheduled sooner than four weeks from the day the
first assignment is received. Exam papers are not returned; however,
the Independent Study Office will notify the student of the grade received.
Grades given by instructors on each assignment are final. All assignments
and other course examinations should be graded before the final exam
is taken.
